Polaroid Wanderings

Since September 2019, Hervé Annen has been exploring the spaces he encounters during his travels through the lens of his Polaroid cameras. This work began during a stay in southern Italy, where he immediately became interested in the sculptural forms found in still lifes, landscapes, silhouettes, and architecture. Today, he travels exclusively with his instant cameras. This medium, by its very nature, imposes a particular rhythm on walking and often influences the routes taken.

Attracted by simple forms and refined compositions, Hervé Annen seeks to capture, in a spontaneous way, the poetry of everyday life. He strives to reveal the discreet beauty of the mundane, to bring out a metaphor or an emotion in the ordinary. He is fond of strong contrasts, between harsh light and deep shadows, which give the images a pictorial intensity. The images exist fully on their own, but also reveal another dimension when brought together in a series. These coherent sets have given rise to several exhibitions—notably in Zurich and Geneva—and a first print edition: Polaroid Wanderings (2024).
