HEIMWEH

This series, entitled Heimweh, is built around the folklore societies of the Valais and features a series of portraits of their members. Heimweh is the German word for homesickness or nostalgia. It describes both the sensation of discomfort and that of a lost reality. Heimweh rather than Heimat! The pain of remembrance rather than its intoxication, a melancholic space rather than a patriotic one. Like photography, these clothes are the imprint of a bygone era. Like vanities, they remind us that nothing can be taken for granted, that everything is doomed to disappear, but that in the absence of immortality, a reprieve is still possible. These people know full well that nostalgia is pointless, that the important thing is to make good use of the time whose flow they cannot stop (Gaston Deferre).
